Composition | Composed of organic protein called FIBROIN This protein is derived from the domesticated silk worm species Bombyx mori (B. mori) of the family Bombycidae. |
---|---|
Processing | Raw silk is produced from a silkworm larva’s cocoon.
Their natural waxes and gums are removed by “degumming process” prior to “braiding process”, allowing for more tighter braid. This braided multifilament thread is now Coated with specially developed silicon for extra smoothness. |
Charecteristics | Silicon coated silk passes easily through tissues and allows non capillary action. All braided sutures have excellant knot security. |
Asorbability | Non absorbable (Even though silk sutures are called non absorbable , they undergo progressive degradation of its fibers results in gradual loss of its tensile strength within the first year and claimed to be completely absorbed at the end of 2 nd year. |
colour | Black |
Caution | contraindicated on patients with known sensitivities or allergies to silk. Not advised to use in urinary tract and biliary tract surgeries. |
Uses | Silk suture is still used, mainly to secure surgical drains. General soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in cardiovascular, ophthalmic, and neurological procedures. |
Sterilization | Etylene oxide |
